This train, the California Zephyr number five, left Chicago with AMTK188 as it's leader, but then the engine had some sort of issue and had to be cut out at Galesburg, IL, after three plus hours of trying to fix the problem. The train left Galesburg with just AMTK816 pulling it, however it was going to need a second engine to get through the mountains out west. It picked up AMTK83 somewhere along the line, probably from the eastbound California Zephyr number six.

UP9071 was still there, running at a high RPM for some reason, when Amtrak arrived.
